This is the story of a New Year’s Eve spent in Rio de Janeiro, and my encounter with Samba. Swept up in the city’s joyful madness, I discovered an incomparable zest for life. Samba was everywhere—danced in the streets by performers who moved like great birds, their gestures both fluid and rhythmic. Everywhere, colour, laughter, joy, and connection.
